Meaning of the poem "homeward bound" by Henry Van Dyke?
I have 2 memorize this poem 4 english class... can anyone tell me what this means?

also, it says something about the "wolves of the sea" (which i think r storms and stuff) and that "black is the eagle that brands them". what is that supposed to mean?

This poem was written during the First World War. Wolves of the sea obviously refers to the German unrestricted submarine warfare of the First World War.
Flower of the German Culture is the young of Germany

Means that the German youth is proud of the German Navy, which in 1914 was the most formidable navy that the Germans ever had in their history, not only did they have submarines but a surface fleet that had some of the best ships in the world at the time.
Choose for your emblem the vulture,

The Royal Crest of the Kaiser was A vulture, which is a bird that eats dead animals in the wild. So you can see the imagery. The vulture representing First World War Germany.
Black is the eagle that brands them. This is a reference to the crest on the flag of World War One Germany.
Brave are the men, and steady,
Who guide her over the deep,--
British mariners, ready
To face the sea-wolf's leap.
Lord of the winds and waters,
Bring our ship to her mark,
Safe from this game of hide-and-seek
With murderers in the dark!
These of course are referring to sailing the North Atlantic fearful that they're going to get torpedoed by the German U-boats. All the while praying that they make it to port.
