[QUESTION #600] Where does the surname Duggar come from?
Duggar. You know, like in The Learning Channel show "Nineteen Kids and Counting"? I just curiously want to know where James Robert "Jim Bob" Duggar's ancestry comes from. And do not say Arkansas because that is where he, his wife and their almost-twenty children (not that we know they are expecting a twentieth, but I am just saying) are presently living.
Let us not forget the ancestry of Jim Bob's wife Michelle Annette Duggar; her maiden name is Ruark.
Duggar Name Meaning and History
Origin unidentified. Possibly a respelling of French Dugard (see Dugar).

Duggar Surname
The ancient Scottish name Duggar is Carried by the descendents of the Pictish pepole. It was a name for a well-meaning person or “do-gooder.”
When the first dictionaries were invented in the last few hundred year, spelling gradually became standardized. Before that time, scribes spelled according sound. Names were often recorded under different spelling variations every time they were written. Duggar has been written Duguid, Doogood, Doghet, Duget, Dugat, Dogood, Dugood, Doguid, Dugett, Dugatt, Duggood, Dugguid, Dogget, doggatt, Doggett and many more. First found in Aberdeenshire, where they held a family seat from very ancient times. http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx/Duggar-family-crest.htm
Dugger Surname [A spelling variation of Duggar—same meaning]
This surname DUGGER was a nickname for a well-intentioned person or do-gooder. The name was originally derived from the Northern Middle English 'du-guid'. Nicknames usually originated as a by-name for someone by describing their appearance, personal disposition or character but which became handed down through the ages and did not apply to their descendants. The name is also spelt DUGGARD, DUGGERD, DOGUDE and DUGGS. The earliest known bearer of the name is John Dogude who was the bailie of Perth in 1379, and went to Prussia in the king's service in 1382. The name has always been most common in Aberdeen. Another record of the name mentions Robert Doget, who was a messenger and carried letters of Edward I to various persons in the year 1304, and Adam Doghete was a witness in St. Andrews in the year 1305. John Doget was a chaplain in 1343. The use of fixed surnames or descriptive names appears to have commenced in France about the year 1000, and such names were introduced into Scotland through the Normans a little over one hundred years later, although the custom of using them was by no means common for many years afterwards. During the reign of Malcolm Ceannmor (1057-1093) the latter directed his chief subjects, after the custom of other nations, to adopt surnames from their territorial possessions, and there created 'The first erlis that euir was in Scotland'. Later instances of the name mention John Dogude who was made burgess of Aberdeen in the year 1479, and Robert Dogude is mentioned in 1478. A family of the name were tenants of Ardmore, Udny, for over a century and a half, and John Dugwid was one of the Committee of Provisions for the Army in 1651. Mr William Dowcat was portioner of Apletrieleaves in 1664. (A portioner was one who possesses part of a property which had been originally divided among co-heirs). Jerome Dugit was persecuted for riot in 1678. Over the centuries, most people in Europe have accepted their surname as a fact of life, as irrevocable as an act of God. However much the individual may have liked or disliked the surname, they were stuck with it, and people rarely changed them by personal choice. A more common form of variation was in fact involuntary, when an official change was made, in other words, a clerical error. http://www.4crests.com/dugger-coat-of-arms.html
The Duggar surname is probably Scottish but the only way to know for certain would be for the family to research their Duggar ancestors and learn their origins.
