Rowe Snow
How did Michael Jackson have white kids?

Why doesn't anyone address the fact that his "kids" are whiter than the driven snow? I don't care what color he ended up, his DNA was still black, I also don't care that Debbie Rowe was a whiter shade of pale, the kids still would have been some shade of black!

Thay was not really his kids!

A Cure for the Winter Blahs

You know how it goes.

You want things to change, but it seems the more you think about it, the worse it is and the longer it takes – kind of like the old saying that "a watched pot never boils." But in this case, it's the longed-for promise of spring, warm breezes and the ability to get outside and into some fresh air that seems to take forever.

Well, here we are. The holidays are over and the landscape is draped in a white blanket of snow as we hunker down for the long winter wait for the first signs of spring. To many, this is a dismal time: a time of sleet and slush with gray, blustery skies and frigid arctic blasts that will undoubtedly hang on much longer than is welcomed.

For the wealthy there is always Bali's crystalline white beaches and warm, azure seas to pass the time, letting silken seawater spill over you as the waves roll to the shore. Or there are Aspen's breathtaking mountains to lift the spirit and offer one a break from winter drudgery by skiing your days away. Still for most Americans, there is Florida with its beaches, resorts and attractions to fill the winter days until Mother Earth spins on her axis and finally delivers up the golden sun once more, bringing with it warm breezes, blooming flowers and the return of green.

Now wait just one minute and back up the fantasy truck.

This is the real world and not everyone is wealthy, nor are all people bestowed with the gift of unlimited free time where they can jet off for weeks to a distant location. Most of us are preoccupied with work and the obligations of raising a family. Besides, there is such a thing as a real-world budget, remember?

Fortunately, for real people in the American Midwest, there is a cure for the winter blahs. There is a place you can go to get away from it all even if you are living on a very tight budget. That place is Northern Wisconsin and the area around Minocqua and Rhinelander in particular is what I speak of.

With hundreds of thousands of acres of national parks, dense forests and countless lakes, the area is a sportsman's paradise not only in the summer, but in the winter months as well. There is ice fishing, skiing (both downhill and cross country), snowshoeing and snow mobiling. In fact there are endless snowmobile trails to be found in Northern Wisconsin and the Ice Age trail extends 1200 miles as it winds from Door County down through the states and over to the West. After a brisk run through the snow, you can stop in at one of the local eateries or taverns and grab a bite, including anything from nachos to steaks. By the way, they have these incredible beef jerky snacks up there that are better then anything you've ever had before!

Being just a few hours away for many and a half-day for some, the drive is fairly short. Regardless of the distance, you will want a place to stay when you get there. It is very likely you will find many resorts and hotels in the area that will be more than sufficient. But let me give you a tip: you can save money by renting a cabin or cottage. In many cases, you get more space with a cabin – as much as two bedrooms or more. Some even include washers and dryers. So with cabin rentals, you can share accommodations with another couple or family, bringing the cost per person to a very reasonable level. Plus, most outdoor activities are free, so you will save there as well. With the right amenities at your cabin, you will have the facilities you need to prepare your own gourmet meals in-house. But after being frugal, you might want to travel into town and dine at the many fine restaurants available, some of which are actually situated right on the shore. You can dine while looking out over the lake.

When you secure a Wisconsin cabin rental, nature is at your doorstep and at this time of year, a winter wonderland awaits you. Deep, soft, marshmallow snow is found on rooftops and in trees. Deer frolic through the forest and everything is so quiet, the forest is like a hush - all you can hear are the sounds of your boots crunching through snow or the snap of a branch as wildlife forage the forest floor seeking food.

A Northern Wisconsin getaway is bound to soothe your soul, cure your cabin fever, and create precious memories. And a Wisconsin cabin rental will keep you from blowing your budget without sacrificing quality.
