A thosand splendid suns was similar to THe Kite Runner because it was the same author
Michael Connelly is the author of the Hieronymus Bosch series: The Black Echo, among others, which I considered as equally exciting. Being fortunate enough to chart the progress of his earlier work from "The Poet" to "The Lincoln Lawyer", a # 1 New York Times Best seller, I felt it genuinely race from cover to cover.
Most strikingly of all as a budding connoisseur of the genre was the likability of the lead character and the real sense of the relationships formed within. Michael Haller is a straight talking lawyer if ever there was one and the story narrates easily in the first person. Lately, it seems a lot of good fiction writers tend to place a fast-talking protagonist mouthing sarcasm, in the driving seat, to lead the way and direct the pages with verbal glamour that can be funny at times but taxing when over used. Not here, here, the main character is the Lincoln lawyer; sharp, quick-witted and dedicated, Mickey Haller portrays a unique honesty built out of charisma that resounds in spite of the sleazy world laying in the woodwork of the courtroom.
Sharply weaved, Connelly is easily the next Grisham with twists in the appropriate places and characters that will not lead you astray, amply providing for the firework build up and inevitable conclusion. For the first time in quite a while I did not read as a critic but with an engrossing interest in a compassionate story. Well told. For a decent mingling of crime and courtroom drama filled with suspense fiction, Michael Connelly commands.
