I have just read an article in a magazine about assisted suicide.....?
If someone you loved and cared about had a terminal illness, say Parkinson's disease or Motor Neurone disease, and they wanted to die with some dignity. Would/could you assist them with suicide?What are your views?

my dad currently has cancer which has spread throughout his body. The chemo has caused muscle wastage and he can barely walk. It was a nice day yesterday and with a great deal of struggle, we got him out into the garden, he stayed there for ten minutes before he asked to come back inside. he couldn't cope with the state of the garden, and watching his healthy next door neighbours busy working outside doing things he can no longer manage.
Obviously the rst of the family and myself want to hold onto him for as long as we can, but there are times when I look at him and I see how incredibly weary he is, how exhausted he feels, when he can just about get to his feet to use his walking frame to make it to the bathroom with assistance, and I can remember the man who used to walk the dogs for hours on end, enjoy hiking along Hadrians wall, we have photos of him on mountains and hillsides and I know he feels the best times are behind him and I wonder sometimes how he feels, what he wants, if he's scared, how will he manage as the pain gets worse and the pain relief is less and less effective?
And I used to think before this happened, that if I had a close relative in this sort of situation that I would be able to help them at the end if that was what they chose. But this is my dad, and I honestly don't know that I could do that. Because he's always been there and I can't imagine a life without him. The other side of that though is that he isn't the dad we used to have, he realises he's dependent on us all now and I know he doesn't like that and he gets frustrated and annoyed if we ask him if he's tired or if he needs to take a nap. He despises his walking frame and he gets irritable when he can't get his feet to go where he wants them to and that he hasn't driven the car for over six months now.
I know people say 'we don't allow our pets to suffer in pain, we do the humane thing' it's just that our pets rely on us to know when the time is right to do that humane thing. How can we honestly help another beloved human being to come to that decision? Specifically when mentally they're still all there, it's physically they're broken. I don't want to see my dad in any more pain than he is right now, but equally I don't want to consider looking at his empty armchair one day and feeling we are partly responsible ...
