How the Jacksonian era in American history represent a time of social change and reform?
How Jacksonian era in American history represents a time of social change and reform? More specifically, how the Great Second Awakening help trigger reform, what are the different types of reformers decided to do, and how did they accomplish their goals.
The Jacksonian era represented a period of change for several reasons. Let's start with the man on the one hand, Andrew Jackson. When Jackson reached manhood, everyone in his family were already dead. His father died when he was young and his mother and his two brothers died during the war of independence. In addition, during the American Revolution, Jackson received a severe gash on his cheek saber a British officer for refusing to clean his boots. Experiences of this kind and the loss of his family force Andrew Jackson to venture into the world on his own, and if he were to succeed, he would have to be a self-made man. Whatever the legacy Andrew Jackson did not waste it, he lost in The banking panic of 1819 (an experience that led him to hate banks, especially the Second Bank of the United States). The main archetype during this period was the life of the common man. Jackson had to risk his own, was a pioneer, became a lawyer, then a chief militia. Finally, it leads to fighting in the Red Stick War and totally crush the Red Sticks at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Shortly after, Jackson would be called to defend (and successfully) New Orleans during the War of 1812. In the absence of military training, we see Jackson being very successful on the battlefield. It was something that gave all American pride, something that makes people feel Jackson has been one of them, not a worldly aristocrat or New York. He had suffered with the common people of the time through the loss of his family, battles with the various Indian tribes and the British, and its financial losses due to bank runs. Here, the American people had a president they could really identify with, and Jackson himself has been devoted to their service. One of his main goals was to repay the debt (known in the context of today that the deficit). He did it by selling federal lands. For Jackson, this was his greatest achievement (and the only president to make the payment of deficit of its mandate. AJ also did not like how the second Bank of the United States has changed the political structure in Washington (many members of the Congress was on its payroll, including Daniel Webster, who has been accepted at the time) and how they had control over the economy. He didn't like it that many Americans have to respond to the bank on all matters, then he led a crusade victorious against him as well. Here, the common man could see in their president a person who had known the things they had done in their lifetime. This gave the pride of Americans and others have played the important concept (especially during the 1800s) that America does not need an aristocracy to survive or function. Like it or not Andrew Jackson had done much to inspire the average American and much of the day helped shape the pride and the stigma that goes with it, the common man and, eventually, the middle class.
